DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY


There are two teachers in the department, both having over twenty five years of teaching experience and well qualified with Ph. D degrees in the subject. Both are actively involved in post-doctoral research projects and programmes. They have also organized and participated in International, National and State- level conferences and seminars in the subject. The faculty members use latest technology in their teaching programme. The departmental results are excellent at all levels of the undergraduate course. Philosophy helps us to learn the skill of how to think more clearly on almost every possible issue like religion, right and wrong, politics, the nature of the world, the mind, science, art and almost every possible topic thereby leading to cultural advancement. The study of Philosophy will equip students with the ability to appreciate and value the problems and issues which affect life in modern society The study of philosophy develops skills which can be applied in a wide variety of jobs like law, computer programming, management consultancy, the civil service QAS, IFS, IPS, IRS), UPSC, GPSC, journalism, social work, jobs related to strategic planning, policy making, defense, banking and teaching in which clarity of thought is a great asset. Philosophy is also valuable for those who aspire to be novelists, critics, poets, playwrights and film – makers. The Philosophy course at the I and II Semester include theoretical as well as practical ethics. It deals with bio-socio problems like euthanasia, suicide and abortion, environmental issues, professional ethics, human and animal experimentation, punishment, Gandhian ethics and some Eastern and Western theories of ethics. The III and IV Semester Philosophy course includes a detailed introduction to the nature of Philosophy and its various concerns like knowledge, reality, religion, art, social and political values and ideals. The V and VI Semesters cover the history of classical Indian and Western as well as modern Western Philosophical ideas; a detailed study of world religions, their beliefs and practices as well as the philosophical approach to these religions; issues in biotechnology and their social implications as well as a course in critical reasoning designed with a view to enable students to tackle exams at various levels including NET / SET. The department also offers course in the “Philosophy of Value Education” and “Environmental Ethics” which are relevant for tackling the problems of modern society.
